Even if you don’t know the background to the debate between Tim Cohen and Prof Jeff Guy, this article is a must-read.
Of course we must remember that when the Soviet Union collapsed in the late ’80′s, the only thing that collapsed was the Soviet Union. Don’t for one minute think that communism went somewhere to die. On the contrary, it went somewhere to rest and recuperate, get some spa treatment for those tired and weary muscles, a pep talk in its corner to get it ready to come out swninging again.
I’m immediately reminded of the Bible verse in Matthew 12:43-45,
“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”
Mmmm. Perhaps that empty house is the failure of society to replace socialism/communism with anything truly resembling a just, free market, libertarian social order. The reality is that we’ve lived in an ideological swamp since the Soviet Union collapsed. The ‘mixed’ economy; a bit of market, a bit of state. Ha! When is it ever just “a bit” of state? Bad ideology abhors a vacuum, and you can almost hear the rush of demonic wind as communism blows in to fill it. Unfortunately the wind you feel is a load of hot air.
