Attempted prison breaks in South Africa have dropped from 281 in 2002 to 41 this year, says  Correctional Services Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

Why would you want to escape if you live in relative luxury compared to the masses of unemployed people in South Africa? You are fed each day, you have clean clothes, you have a gymnasium, you have entertainment including television, and you live with people who become friends.

It is all about incentives. Prisoners and their families should be made to pay for their stays in prison, not the taxpaying public, especially not those who were aggressed against in the first place.
